I just shared a blog about values-based legacy and my own journey—and I stand by every word.
But I also need to pause and say something else.
It’s my intention to blog on what it means to plan for the end of life, in not only a legal way of thinking, but just a really human way of thinking. I just had my first child in December 2024 and have been anything but consistently blogging. And yet, let me interrupt the intended focus of this blog from Estate Planning to waking up to live intentionally. The stakes are too high, do not let your values flow to the wasteside. As some might have once said, check yourself, before you wreck yourself.
In the event of becoming a mom, and in the event of watching a genocide live streamed, and reading and hearing of tragedies, oppression and loss elsewhere -and near- what occurs to me is utter loss, and fear of irretrievable loss. What I know humanity to be, has and continues to quickly disappear in the wake of not only hate, racism and supremacy, but worse, apathy. What makes humanity is our cognizable good, a tendency toward appreciation, an involvement in not only the problem but in the coming out or solving of it, an inclination towards decency, what in Arabic and Islam is known as, our fitra. Our humanity is at a loss. (Go read the Chapter of Time in the Quran, or Surahtul Asr)
As an Estate Planner, while we talk about planning for our own inevitable death, too many are dying unjustly, violently, silently. And too many of us are grieving in silence, scrolling through images of horror, wondering if anyone still cares.
The truth is: grief is part of this work. Not just personal loss, but collective heartbreak. And planning ahead isn’t separate from that—it’s a response to it. A way of saying: I see what’s happening. I know life is fragile. And I want to live—and leave—with intention, not illusion.
We can’t numb ourselves to injustice and still claim to value dignity, equity, connection, or beauty. This work is about aligning with truth. Even when it hurts. Especially when it hurts.
